Despax is establishing himself as an artist whose interpretations bring a rare sincerity and imagination to the music. His latest Chopin preludes album on Signum Classics was recently chosen as „Album of the week“ by Classic FM in the UK and received a five-star review on Diapason in France.
One of the challenges as a concert pianist is to adapt to the instrument, like taming a new beast each time we perform, to get to know its character and all its nuances, until it nearly becomes an organic extension of the performer. When I sit in front of a Fazioli piano, I feel reassured and excited, because I know this instrument will have its own unique personality, yet will respond to all my demands, to the most subtle changes of touch, with an incredible range of colours, clarity of tone, and the highest, uncompromising build quality. This means I can purely focus on what’s important, the music.
